A Look At Roller Hockey

November 30th, 2011

As its name implies, Roller Hockey is a combination sport that links hockey and skating together into one single activity. There are two types of Roller Hockey, including Hardball and Inline Hockey. While the two games involve different equipment, rules and types of skating, they are similar in that the action is fast paced and exciting.

An Inline Hockey competition, which is one form of Roller Hockey, is held in a rectangular rink, which measures twice as long as it is wide and must be as close to 200ft. x 100ft. as possible with the minimum size being 165ft. x 65ft. The rinks surface can be constructed of wood, asphalt, plastic or cement. The setup is similar in style to that of ice hockey and features two goals and a center red line. The puck, however, is made of plastic. Each game of Inline Hockey features two teams, which can consist of up to 12 players. However, only five players from each team are allowed on the rink at any given time, including the goalie. As for referees, there must be two on the rink during play. A goal is scored after one of the players sends the puck into the opposing teams net and it crosses the goal line. Each game consists of four quarters, each of which lasts for 12 minutes. At the conclusion of the game, a winning team is announced.

Hardball Hockey, the other form of Roller Hockey, is played with a ball rather than a puck. In addition, the stick used in Hardball Hockey is different in its design as opposed to Inline Hockey. Quite often referred to as a cane, its shape is reminiscent of the same. During a Hardball Hockey competition, two teams of five players attempt to get the ball into their opposing teams goal. Each team is permitted to have up to 10 players, with a minimum of 6, but only five can be on the rink while a game is in play. Competitors are permitted to stop the ball with any part of their body except the hand, but it can only resume motion with the use of the playing stick. Hardball Hockey is played in two 25 minute intervals and upon expiration, a winning team is announced based on the one that has the highest number of goals.

Of both Roller Hockey variations, Inline is the most popular form in the United States. In fact, many have never even seen a game of Hardball Hockey. Regardless, both types continue to make Roller Hockey the worldwide popular sport that it is today.

Air Purifiers Aid In A Healthy Lifestyle

November 30th, 2011

Whether you are healthy, sick, young, or old, everyone can benefit from an air purifier. Allergies, asthma, respiratory problems, and the spread of viruses and illnesses can all be related to indoor pollution. Investing in a good quality air purifier can protect you and your family by greatly reducing your risk of sickness related to indoor pollution. Every home contains these environmental toxins, even ones that are often cleaned thoroughly. It is proven that the air inside our homes can be more harmful than the air outside because air in the home recirculates and never has the opportunity to be filtered.

Allergens inside the home like pollen, mold, and pet dander can be very irritating to people who are prone to allergies. Asthma, an inflammatory disease of the lungs, can cause symptoms like coughing, runny nose, red eye, digestive problems, fatigue, dizziness, and congestion. Air purifiers can provide a huge relief for these symptoms, by greatly reducing the amount of the allergens in the air. This also can cut down the cost of expensive medications that are often used to treat these illnesses.

Air purifiers can also reduce the spread of illnesses and viruses like the common cold or the flu. They are very beneficial to people with low immune systems, like the elderly, and families with children because they lower the spread of illness. By filtering the air, air purifiers stop these illnesses from spreading throughout the house reducing the risk of contamination to other people in the home. Elderly people and people with low immune systems often do not have the means to fight off infection and illness so they are particularly vernable to such contamination. Children in school and daycare are exposed to sicknesses at school that are easily brought home and spread to the family.

There are many toxins in the home including pollen, mold, animal dander, smoke, bacteria, and germs. The air in your home will be much cleaner if you decide to invest in an air purifier because they filter or ionize the air greatly reducing indoor toxins. Air Ionizers and Hepa Filters are the most commonly used air purifiers. Air Ionizers distribute negative ions throughout the air causing the toxins to bond and fall out of the air. HEPA filters draw the air in using a fan, where it filters the air, and redistributes it back throughout the house.

In our society today there is more pollution now than there ever was before, especially in the home. Owning an air purifier is the best way for you to protect yourself and your family from such toxins. Air purifiers are essential for the home because they greatly reduce the amount of pollution in your home lowering your chance of developing sickness due to indoor toxins. Air purifiers are one of the best things you can invest in for your home and your health today more than ever.

Online Counseling – a Timely Happenstance

November 30th, 2011

Online counseling may be the latest and greatest improvement in therapy. It seems to be perfect for this fast-paced world with many workers who sit by their computer screens all day long. Yet, it is not limited to today’s information technology workers or those whose work requires being online frequently.

Imagine how convenient it will be to read a quick email from your therapist that can give you just the insight you were looking for to move beyond your failed relationship or that obsession with chocolate that was left in the wake of a bad break-up. This could be the very addiction that is causing you to buy larger sized clothes all of the sudden.

Think about the worried mother who doesn’t quite know what to do about her child’s out-of-character or unusual behavior. Or even worse, the distraught parent trying to cope with his teenager’s drug or alcohol addiction. And of course there are other intense problems, such as teen pregnancy, death of a loved one or terminal illness in the family.

These can be tough problems to tackle in an already stressed environment that is the world we live in. But when do you find the time to go to your therapy session? This is especially the case when your therapist is not available during the day, over weekends or at some other time when it is convenient to you?

Think about the time it takes to travel back and forth for a therapy session even when you do manage to schedule one. There is the ever increasing cost of gasoline to contend with too, adding to the stress that might lead you to seek counseling in the first place!

Then there are some problems that you might not want to talk to someone face-to-face with, especially someone who lives in your home town. Wouldn’t it be much easier to sign up for email counselling sessions with someone in a far away city? You could even open an anonymous email account with yahoo or some other email provider that doesn’t necessarily need your real name, and use that to offer near total anonymity.

This seems like a good idea, it can provide you the kind of nurturing environment needed to really pour your heart out to the therapist and get a professional response via email. The therapist doesn’t have to know anything about your identity and can still treat you professionally. And this could mean no embarrassing record that could be subpoenaed in a court of law.

A good online counseling plan might include unlimited emails for a certain amount of time. Giving you the kind of access to a therapist that you might not get in a once-a-week appointment. Not without paying extra, that is.

Yes, there are a number of benefits to seeking online therapy. Anonymity, access, time and money savings. No one needs to know you are in therapy and they won’t ever see you “go” to an appointment. Yet, while you are sitting at your computer, an email may pop up with just the timely advice or encouragement you were looking for, the kind of support that can be hard to come by in today’s crazy, mixed up world.

For Education: The Writing is on the Oil Well

November 29th, 2011

American education has to become more competitive yesterday. As published in Discover Magazine, January 2006:

The performance of U.S. students in middle and high schools on international math and science exams is below the average of 38 other countries. Even advanced American math and physics students score near dead last among students in 20 tested countries, the panel reported. Since 1990 the number of bachelor’s degrees in engineering has declined 8 percent; in mathematics, 20 percent. While 32 percent of U.S. students graduate with degrees in science and engineering, the figure in China is 59 percent.

With the American economy so dependent on oil and oil related products it is absolutely imperative that America stop lagging behind in education and take the lead once again.

With countries in the Middle East like Qatar having vast oil and natural gas deposits making a huge effort today to start the transition of their economy from an oil based one to a knowledge based economy should be a significant warning sign to the United States. These people have some of the largest oil reserves in the world and they are aggressively planning for an economy not based on oil.

As was stated in April 7, 2006 issue of the journal Science “This small Persian Gulf emirate is preparing for life after oil and gas by pouring wealth into education and research”

For example:

In Education City in Qatar the RAND-Qatar Policy Institute has helped Qatar to make tremendous changes in the country’s educational institutions. And Qatar Science and Technology Park will be an incubator where private companies can partner with government agencies and academic institutions, developing research into commercial applications and driving Qatar and the region toward a diversified, knowledge-based economy.

What American Institutions are participating?

Prominent signs indicate the presence of educational heavyweights, including Weill Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, and Texas A&M.

It is also noted in the journal Science that “Qatar’s primary and secondary schools, which have begun to dispense with traditional rote learning, Al-Hajari reports, replacing it with curricula designed to stimulate creative and independent thinking. And it extends to Qatar University, which was founded in 1977 and is independent of Education City.”

Why should we as Americans worry about Qatar?

The fact is that America is ranked 39th world wide in math and science education. Consider that Texas was just ranked, as a state, 24th in a country that was just placed as 39th.

Countries like Qatar, Singapore, China & India are readily getting some of the best researchers that have been educated and trained in America to relocate to their countries.

For example the Journal Science Reports that:

Texas A&M is setting up joint research with the oil industry and studies related to clean air, while Weill Cornell will concentrate on biomedical projects relevant to local health problems. (Diabetes Research) To accelerate the process, (Qatar) plans to bring interested scientists from Weill Cornell’s New York base and recruit postdocs. For his part, (Qatar) hopes to lure back expatriate Arab scientists currently flourishing in the West. “Many diaspora researchers are interested in going back if the infrastructure is there,” says Hassan. To capitalize on the research, the Qatar Foundation is building the Qatar Science and Technology Park right next door to Education City.

Already, big players in industrial R&D, including GE, Microsoft, and ExxonMobil, have signed up and are waiting to move in.

What is happening? Foreigners are coming to America and getting education and training and then exporting that knowledge and experience out of the country.

American researchers and educators are leaving America to be able to do the research that they are either denied or do not have funding for in the United States.

The drain is affecting the quality of education and research in America.

America is loosing it’s competitive edge in a global economy in the area of research to product development.

The quality of educational facilities in the United States is falling below that of the competitive countries, as are the salaries and benefits which lure our leading researchers away.

These well funded research facilities are in countries that do not hold back development and research in controversial areas like Stem Cell Research. In fact they encourage it and fund it. These countries are leaving the United States behind and will reap the financial rewards and the health benefits of such research before the United States. They will generate jobs and wealth. The Unite States will just lose.

In an article from February 24, 2006 in the Journal Science:

“At an elite science high school in Dallas, Texas, President George W. Bush told the assembled students that the United States “needs a workforce strong in engineering and science and physics” to remain the world’s top economic power. His words would seem to bode well for precollege activities funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the only federal agency with an explicit mission to improve science and math education. But 3 days later, the president unveiled a 2007 budget request that would cut–for the third straight year–a 4-year-old program at NSF aimed at doing exactly that.” “If the (Education and Human Resources) EHR budget stays flat, there’s no hope of accomplishing what corporate America says is needed to improve the U.S. workforce,”

In his Sate of the union Address on January 31, 2006 President Bush Stated:

“And to keep America competitive, one commitment is necessary above all: We must continue to lead the world in human talent and creativity. Our greatest advantage in the world has always been our educated, hardworking, ambitious people — and we’re going to keep that edge. Tonight I announce an American Competitiveness Initiative, to encourage innovation throughout our economy, and to give our nation’s children a firm grounding in math and science.”

However, on February 27, 2006 President Bush comes out and announces his plans for the budget: (Washington Post By Mike Allen and Peter Baker 02/07/06)

“President Bush plans to unveil a $2.5 trillion budget today eliminating dozens of politically sensitive domestic programs, including funding for education, environmental protection and business development, while proposing significant increases for the military and international spending, according to White House documents.”

These problems that are highlighted above are at the heart of the problem.

Now get into the “No child Left Behind” program which has altered public education and forced it into a rote learning model by demanding testing performance at the sacrifice of building critical thinking skills.

According to Wikipedia Rote Learning is defined as: a learning technique which avoids grasping the inner complexities and inferences of the subject that is being learned and instead focuses on memorizing the material so that it can be recalled by the learner exactly the way it was read or heard. In other words, it also means learning just for the test.

For a Texas school to achieve the academic acceptable rating (the lowest passing standard)

According to the TEA’s own 2005 Accountability Manual:

Schools must have passing rates of:

50% percent in Reading Tests

50% in Writing Tests

50% in Social Studies

35% percent in Math tests

25% percent in Science tests

The aspects of learning that involved critical thinking and questioning what is being taught are dieing on the vine so that we reflect an acceptable passing rating as defined by the TAKS test standards for Texas.

I find it horrifying that such low standards are required of students to pass the TAKS test in order to get an academically acceptable rating for the entire school.

No single student would be allowed to pass a single test with a 60%, 40% or 35% grade. The Government is telling us Schools are getting better and more schools are meeting the acceptable rating than they were two years ago. The only reason that is true is because they have lowered the standard and created loop holes that specifically allow for test scores of minorities to be excluded in the reporting.

Our schools are being forced onto a path of intentional failure by placing the appearance of demands and accountability without funding. The current administration in Washington and our representatives across the United States all talk about how important education is but their actions of undermining those initiatives by cutting the money out of education only speak to their real agenda of forcing public education to fail so that they can privatize education.

This agenda is being achieved at the sacrifice of this generation of children that are in school today. The damage that is being done will take decades to repair. Our economy will suffer and the quality of life for your children might actually be less than yours for the first time in American history.

As a nation we need to stop wasting time with foolish projects like School Vouchers and we need to stop spending money and resources on trying to get intelligent design into science classes. These distractions only drain valuable resources and time from the educational system while exasperating the problems at the expense of the education of our children. We need to fix the problems – not create new ones.

We need:

To hold elected officials accountable for sacrificing education.

Better pay for teachers.

More Teachers.

Better resources for education.

Properly fund “No child Left behind”

Modify “No Child Left Behind” to promote critical thinking.

Abandon the method of Rote Learning.

Increase funding for “Head Start”.

More involvement of higher learning institutions through the entire educational life of a child.

To spend more money on students per year than we do on prison inmates. ($13,000 per prisoner vs. $6,000 per student)

Stimulate more research in higher education.

Open up Stem Cell research and other programs to lure the leading minds.

Restore incentives to bring the brightest and most talented researchers to America.

To be number 1 in education world wide.

For Texas to lead the United States in education as well.

I can think of no greater investment for our future than our children and their education.

Yes, Your Office Might Be Causing You Pain

November 29th, 2011

Once upon a time, it was believed that heavy lifting and dirty work would be the main work-related causes for people seeking pain relief. It was once believed that people who worked in offices and the like were at a lower risk of contracting diseases due to their work, as opposed to the ones that worked in the field. Of course, that bit of conventional wisdom is now being tossed out the window. In the modern office’s cubicle-based environments, employees are at just as high a risk of work-related illness as anyone else. According to some studies, they might be even worse off that people working in the field depending on the conditions of the working environment.

Give The Right Graduation Gift

November 29th, 2011

Do you know someone that is about to graduate from high school, college. or another important milestone? If so, it is important that you, the graduate’s friends and family, bless the graduate with the perfect graduation gift.

In selecting a good graduation gift the first and most obvious thing to consider is the age and stage of life of the graduate who will receive your gift. An eighteen year old finishing high school will probably appreciate a different gift than a thirty year old graduating from medical school. Keep this in mind before you head out to purchase a graduation gift.

The age of the graduate is not the only important thing to consider. Keep in mind the goals of the graduate. If the graduate is finishing high school, are they heading to college or have they chosen to begin working full-time? Perhaps they are taking a year to travel the world before they head off to college. Consider these goals as you attempt to buy the perfect graduation gift. Does the graduate have his or her own living space that will need to be filled with furniture or appliances?

Consider too the needs and tastes of the graduate. If the person you are purchasing a graduation gift for does not like anything in black or gray, then perhaps you should stay away from gifts in those colors. Does your graduate love sports? Consider getting them a gift that will fuel their love for sports. If your graduate is about to travel the world you can get them a suitable gift like new luggage or a camera to take photographs.

In general, people will enjoy a unique and personal gift that fits them more than they will enjoy a general gift that may not fit their needs at all. So in your brainstorming and your shopping for a graduation gift try to be as personal to the graduate as possible. Honor their important accomplishment with a graduation gift that they will enjoy and cherish for years. Stay away from gifts that are temporary in nature like gift certificates or money and instead give gifts that will last.

Many of us remember the special time that graduation was. We remember the joy of being surrounded by family and friends on our special day and we remember being celebrated by the ones we love. Perhaps you even remember some of the best or worst gifts you were given. If so, let the gifts you were given serve as reminders as you attempt to purchase the right graduation gifts for others.

If money is an issue for you, consider making a unique gift for your graduate. A memorable and loved gift does not have to be an expensive one, it only has to be one that was heartfelt and intentional. So whatever your budget, the most important thing is to keep the graduate in mind. Once you have made or purchased the perfect graduation gift, wrap it and gift it to your graduate with love.

Preventing the Perils of Teen Smoking

November 28th, 2011

It can start with simple curiosity or peer pressure, but teen smoking can become a lifelong habit that will eventually be hard to quit. As a parent, helping teens resist taking that first puff will help their children live a healthier life ahead. Sometimes, teen smoking can be a form of rebellion, or a way to fit in with the crowd. Some teenagers light up in an attempt to lose weight or feel better. Other teens tend to smoke so that they can be cool or feel independent. For a concerned parent, asking the teen about his or her thoughts on smoking can start them on a conversation about quitting or preventing the start of such a habit. It is also good to have a friendly discussion with teenagers about the power of choice, and how their choices could eventually make or break them in the future.

Laser Printers or Inkjet Printers? A Buyers Guide

November 27th, 2011

Should you buy an inkjet or a laser printer?? Often people buying a new printer are confused about whether to buy a laser printer or inkjet printer. The short answer is it depends on what youll be using it for, and how much youll be using it.

Inkjet printers have a lower initial purchase cost but cost more to run because the ink is more expensive when measured on a per page basis. Laser printers cost more but their running costs are lower and they have a better print quality because in general they have a higher resolution (expressed in dots per inch – dpi).

If you want to print photos at home however, you are best to choose a photo quality inkjet printer.

Inkjets are great for home use and for photo printing. Lasers are good for high-volume applications, like offices, or for applications that need high print quality.

Inkjet printers transfer tiny droplets of ink directly to the page. A laser printer creates an electrostatic pattern on a drum that attracts ink powder that is subsequently fused onto the paper. This is more complex technology so means a higher price than for an inkjet printer.

If you examine the same page printed on both a laser printer and an inkjet, you will be able to see that the characters on the laser printer produced page are sharper. That said however, inkjet printers are getting better all the time in terms of the sharpness of printed characters.

Another aspect to consider is how heavily you will be using a printer. Printer manufacturers express the durability of a printer in terms of duty cycle in pages per month.

For example, a typical laser printer will be capable of a duty cycle up to 7,000 pages a month while a typical entry level inkjet printer is capable of up to 500 pages per month.

Some of the more recent inkjets provide excellent color clarity and brightness, and are very well suited for printing photographs.

While inkjet printers themselves are cheaper, their ink is more expensive per page printed. Ink cartridges need to be replaced fairly often if you print a lot, especially if youre printing pictures or photos.

The manufacturers stated pages per cartridge measurements are very much dependent on what you printing. They are based on only a small percentage of the page actually being covered in ink.

Toner cartridges for laser printers have a higher unit price than inkjet cartridges, but have a higher capacity so that the cost per page is lower for lasers.

Intelliflix The Online Dvd Rental Company To Avoid

November 27th, 2011

I remember when signing up with Intelliflix for $188 a year thinking what a great deal I just gotten, and how much money I was saving compared to the competition. Intelliflix claims to have over sixty thousand movie titles, rent video games, and also rent adult titles. I sincerely doubt that they have anywhere close to sixty thousand movie titles, and they have recently suspended their online game rentals. They still claim to rent other movie titles, but a couple of movies every few months, and it hardly seems like they even do that anymore.

Switching To Day-Time Cleaning

November 27th, 2011

All the talk in the cleaning press at the moment and over the past few months has been about the move to cleaning offices during normal working hours. Machine manufacturers are coming up with quiet vacuum cleaners, scrubber driers and buffing machines all of which supposedly allow you to carry out the cleaning without disturbing the occupants of the premises.

For cleaning companies this would make life a lot more pleasant and cleans easier and cheaper to manage and the cleaners would be able to work more sociable hours. According to some reports in the cleaning press companies are falling over themselves to switch their cleaning to office hours as opposed to after they have closed down for the day. My own experience would not indicate that this is so. None of our clients have asked to move their cleaning times or even considered it as a feasible option when they have been approached about the possibilities of changing the cleaning times.

Vacuuming with silent vacuums is not a problem. Cleaning toilet areas is not a problem. Cleaning kitchen areas is a problem as they tend to be in constant use during the day. Doing anything to hard floors is also a problem. If there are people using those hard floors then while they are being cleaned they have to be diverted away from those areas which is obviously an inconvenience to them and something that is not going to be tolerated for long.. Any food deposited in waste disposal units, bins etc will be left overnight with the potential to smell come the following day. Also there can be no attempt at cleaning work stations whilst someone is at work.

All in all the problems of cleaners trying to do their work whilst the occupants of a building are trying to carry on with their work far outweigh the advantages. Cleaning times will be extended and prices will rise. The theory is good and I would love to be able to get all the cleaning out of the way come five in the evening but the practicalities will not allow it to happen in many work environments.

What Happened on June 21

November 27th, 2011

June 21 is always the 172nd day of the year, unless it’s a leap year in which it is the 173rd day of the year. This is on a Gregorian calendar, which leaves 193 days remaining until January 1st, where a new year beings. June 21 marks the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere. That means that June 21 is typically the day of the year year with the longest hours of daylight in the northern hemisphere and the shortest in the southern hemisphere.

The main goal in this stage is survive. And if you will be lucky, win some chips. If you will be knocked out in this stage, you give nothing, even fun.

Play only solid start hands. Do not pay to view additional cards with trash hands. Play A-K, A-Q, K-Q, A-x suited and top pairs (two tens or better)

Rise if you have one of 4 top possible combinations. Do not bet All-in. Of course, If you have the best hand, you must rise pot amount as high as you can.

Many players bet All-in in early tournament stage. Its too early to try to win tournament. Do not call All-in if not sure and if you havent nuts.

And the last, Remember, main goal is survive! Not win all chips, only survive. And win some chips if you will be lucky.

An Analysis of Wells Fargo & Company (WFC)

    November 26th, 2011

    Copyright 2006 Geoff Gannon

Wells Fargo & Company (WFC) is a huge Western and Midwestern bank that provides a diverse array of financial services to its more than 23 million customers. The company employs more than 150,000 people at its over 6,000 locations nationwide. Wells Fargo has about $500 billion in assets.

While the company continues to derive more than half its revenues from interest income (about $26 billion), its activities are not limited to collecting deposits and lending money. Wells Fargo engages in other businesses such as brokerage services, asset management, and investment banking. The company also makes venture capital investments.

Over the last ten years, Wells Fargo has averaged a 1.57% return on assets and an 18.19% return on equity.

    Location

Wells Fargo is closely associated with California in the minds of most investors. The company now operates in 23 different states. However, the concentration in California remains.

Mortgage lending in California accounts for approximately 14% of Wells Fargos total loan portfolio. Commercial real estate loans in California account for another 5% of the companys total loans. No other single state accounts for a similarly sized portion of total loans. In fact, neither mortgage lending nor commercial real estate lending in any other state accounts for more than 2% of Wells Fargos total loans.

    Cross-Selling

Wells Fargos focus on cross-selling is well known. The company has a stated goal of doubling the number of products the average consumer and business customer has with Wells Fargo to eight products per customer (from the current four products per customer).

Cross-selling increases customer stickiness. It also helps increase profitability by decreasing expenses relative to revenues. The need for a large physical footprint is reduced as is the need for a large number of bankers. Instead, the existing infrastructure is able to provide additional revenue from the same customers.

Wells Fargos Chairman & CEO, Richard Kovacevich, explains the importance of the companys cross-selling in the Vision & Values section of the corporate website:

“Cross-selling or what we call needs-based selling is our most important strategy. Why? Because it is an increasing returns business model. Its like the network effect of e-commerce. It multiplies opportunities geometrically. The more you sell customers the more you know about them. The more you know about them the easier it is to sell them more products. The more products customers have with you the better value they receive and the more loyal they are. The longer they stay with you the more opportunities you have to meet even more of their financial needs. The more you sell them the higher the profit because the added cost of selling another product to an existing customer is often only about ten percent of the cost of selling that same product to a new customer. This gives usas an aggregator a significant cost advantage over one product or one channel companies. Cross-selling re-invents how financial services are aggregated and sold to customers just like other aggregators such as Wal-Mart (general merchandise), Home Depot (home improvement products) and Staples (office supplies).”

Mr. Kovacevichs enthusiasm for the cross-selling model is well justified. It is difficult to quantify the importance of meeting all the varied needs of your customers, because you can not measure the opportunities you missed. However, it is obvious that reducing each customers interest in considering a competitors services will greatly increase long-term profitability for any company engaged in any line of business not just for a bank.

Later, in the same website section, Mr. Kovacevich addresses the importance of customer stickiness:

“(Cross-selling) is our most important customer-related sales metric. We want to earn 100 percent of our customers business. The more products customers have with Wells Fargo the better deal they get, the more loyal they are, and the longer they stay with the company, improving retention. Eighty percent of our revenue growth comes from selling more products to existing customers.”

This focus on retention is an important part of a long-term plan to maintain Wells Fargos above-average returns on assets and equity. Extraordinary profitability comes from differentiating your product or service from those of your competitors. Increasing customer stickiness and reducing comparison shopping is a key part of maintaining extraordinary profitability.

Some businesses are blessed with enviable economics because of their products natural prominence in the minds of their customers. Most businesses are obsessed with market share. But, how many really think about mind share? Obviously, a product like Coke (KO), Hershey (HSY), or Snickers is going to have a positive association in the minds of consumers.

For many people, these products will also have a prominent place in each customers mind (relative to other products and services on which money can be spent). A few other businesses have a healthy mind share without the positive association; GEICO is the most obvious example. The companys brand conjures up nothing but the words auto insurance. Of course, thats all the GEICO brand has to do.

So, what does all this have to do with Wells Fargo? Mind share isnt just the result of exposure to advertising. In fact, in most cases, exposure to advertising can not duplicate the kind of results that a direct, differentiated experience creates. Entertainment properties are by far the leaders in mind share. People who saw and loved Star Wars remember the film. In fact, they dont just remember the film, they actually file it away (or, more precisely, cross reference it) in countless ways within their mind.

The evidence for this particular example is abundant. There are countless references to Star Wars in other media. The name, the music, the opening text and countless other elements are immediately recognizable. Even the films Star Wars fans hated made more money than almost any other movies in the history of cinema and this was decades after the original came out. So, obviously Star Wars has the kind of lasting mind share any business should aspire to if it hopes to continuously earn extraordinary profits.

Unfortunately, most businesses, however well run, can not attain this kind of mind share. The products and services they provide can never be as differentiated and memorable as a motion picture. Just as importantly, the positive associations will not be present, simply because the product or service is not inherently exciting, entertaining, or pleasant. This is clearly the case in financial services.

So, what can a financial services company do to improve its mind share? The most obvious tactic is simply to wow its customers. In fact, Wells Fargos CEO discusses this particular option in the Vision and Values section of the companys website:

” We have to ‘wow!’ them. We know what that feels like because were all customers. We go to the cleaners, the grocery store, a restaurant or whatever, and we find a situation where were ‘wowed!’ We walk out and we say, those people really listened to me and helped me get what I need. All of us hear stories about customers, say, who pick a certain line at the supermarket because they know the person who bags the groceries connects with customers smiles, greets regular customers by name, asks how their families are doing. When a personal banker helps a customer in one of our stores, or when a customer gets help from one of our phone bankers or does transactions on wellsfargo.com we want them to say, ‘That was great. I cant wait to tell someone.’”

Another option worth pursuing is widening the associations present in the customers mind. Financial services is a business where associations tend to be more conscious, categorized, and hierarchical than the associations formed in more heavily branded businesses. Put simply, the (potential) customer usually thinks of a set before thinking of an element within that set. Like many mental associations, the information can be returned in either direction. For example, the customer may normally think banks and then think Wells Fargo, but will also be able to return the word bank if prompted by the name Wells Fargo. This categorization is important, because it provides (limited) permission for Wells Fargo to expand its mind share horizontally (across service categories).

In other words, providing a diverse range of financial services doesnt just make sense from the providers perspective, it also makes sense from the users perspective, because the user of financial services has already grouped deposits, borrowing, credit cards, insurance, brokerage services, asset management, etc. together in a very loose way within his mind. As a result of this mental network, one positive experience with Wells Fargo will greatly affect a customers desire to pay for an additional service, even if the two services are not really all that similar.

The three key elements here are: a broader definition of what Wells Fargo is (a place that does money things, not just a bank), a positive experience, and some sense of trust that the quality of service will be consistent. The last requirement is the easiest to meet, because its natural for a customer to assume that the positive experience was not a fluke, much the way a diner assumes the good meal he had at a particular restaurant was not caused by his picking the best offering from the menu. The diner usually assumes the overall quality of the restaurants various entrees is superior. Likewise, a good experience with one of Wells Fargos products or services will likely rub off on its other offerings.

    Valuation

Shares of Wells Fargo currently yield just over 3%. The stock trades at a price-to-book ratio of just under 2.75 and a price-to-earnings ratio of less than 15.

    Conclusion

Over the last 5, 10, 15, and 20 years shareholders of Wells Fargo & Company have fared better than the S&P 500. As of the end of last year, WFCs total return over the last ten years was 17% vs. 9% for the S&P. Over the last 20 years, WFC outpaced the S&P 500 by an even wider margin: 21% vs. 12%.

Wells Fargo has a stellar reputation with investors. The company is the only U.S. bank to earn Moodys highest credit rating. Wells Fargo also boasts a well-known major shareholder. The largest owner of the companys common stock is Berkshire Hathaway. Warren Buffetts holding company has a roughly 5.5% stake in Wells Fargo. Berkshires last reported purchase occurred during the first quarter of this year.

Wells Fargo has a stated goal of achieving double-digit growth in earnings and revenue while managing a return on assets over 1.75% and a return on equity over 20%. Those are both very ambitious goals. The company has achieved some of the highest returns on assets and equity of any major U.S. bank. However, Wells Fargo will probably need to increase the percentage of revenue it derives from fee businesses if it is to achieve these goals.

In the years ahead, the company may well become more of a diversified financial services business. In fact, thats what I expect will happen. The companys commitment to cross-selling is not some fad. Eventually, this commitment will change the way investors think about Wells Fargo. Soon, it may be considered much more than a bank.

Wells Fargos CEO makes the case that his companys P/E is simply too low. Wells Fargo has a solid history of strong growth and profitability. So, why should it be valued similarly to most other banks? Shouldnt it be awarded a multiple more in line with a growth company?

Theres actually some merit to this argument. Wells Fargo is unusually well positioned for a bank. Often, those banks that seem certain to earn very high returns on assets and equity for many years to come are poorly positioned for future growth. These banks are often smaller than their competitors and focused on a specific geographic niche. Any acquisitions would dilute the exceptional profitability of the banks niche.

Of course, there are also many consolidators in the banking industry. Unfortunately, many of these banks do not have a history of earning the kind of returns on assets and equity that Wells Fargo has achieved. Even more importantly, there is little differentiation between these titans of the banking industry and their national competitors. Therefore, their moats are highly suspect.

Wells Fargo is a different kind of bank. It has a history of extraordinary growth and profitability. There are two obvious opportunities for future growth: geographic expansion and cross-selling. Of these two opportunities, it’s clear Im more enamored with the latter. An eastward push is not necessary, and certainly not via an ill-advised acquisition.

There is a lot of value in the Wells Fargo franchise and there is plenty of room within that franchise for future growth. Thats one of the great advantages of the financial services industry. With the right model, limits to growth are almost non-existent. In other highly-profitable industries, there is often nowhere to reinvest new capital at a similar rate of return.

If Wells Fargo is a growth stock, it is a peculiar sort of growth stock. Maybe that is what attracted Buffett to the company in the first place. Here is a business with a strong franchise that can grow for many years to come. Perhaps most importantly, it is a growth business that frequently trades in the market at value like multiples, simply because its a bank.

At the current market price, Wells Fargo is the sort of investment you make once and forget. The valuation is not so cheap as to promise a good return if the business falters. But, the business is not so suspect as to require the margin of safety be provided by a low P/E ratio. Sometimes, near certain growth is the margin of safety.

What Really Makes You Tick? 10 questions you should ask to yourself: a preparation to self-improvement

    November 26th, 2011

“What Really Makes You Tick?” 10 questions you should ask to yourself: a preparation to self-improvement

Be all you can be, but it’s not always in the Army. I often see myself as somewhat contented with my life the way things are, but of course it’s hard to think of anything else when where are real issues to be discussed.

Still I aspire for something deeper and more meaningful.

So we’re all pelted with problems. Honestly it shouldn’t even bother or even hinder us to becoming all we ought to be. Aspirations as kids should continue to live within us, even though it would be short-lived or as long as we could hold on to the dream. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks or can they?

    1. What do I really want?
The question of the ages. So many things you want to do with your life and so little time to even go about during the day.

Find something that you are good at can help realize that small step towards improvement. Diligence is the key to know that it is worth it.

    2. Should I really change?
Today’s generation has taken another level of redefining ’self’, or at least that’s what the kids are saying. Having an army of teenage nieces and nephews has taught me that there are far worse things that they could have had than acne or maybe even promiscuity. So how does that fit into your lifestyle?

If history has taught us one thing, it’s the life that we have gone through. Try to see if partying Seventies style wouldn’t appeal to the younger generation, but dancing is part of partying. Watch them applaud after showing them how to really dance than break their bones in break-dancing.

    3. What’s the bright side in all of this?
With so much is happening around us there seem to be no room for even considering that light at the end of the tunnel. We can still see it as something positive without undergoing so much scrutiny. And if it’s a train at the end of the tunnel, take it for a ride and see what makes the world go round!

    4. Am I comfortable with what I’m doing?
There’s always the easy way and the right way when it comes to deciding what goes with which shoes, or purse, shirt and whatnot. It doesn’t take a genius to see yourself as someone unique, or else we’ll all be equally the same in everything we do. Variety brings in very interesting and exciting questions to be experimented.

    5. Have I done enough for myself?
Have you, or is there something more you want to do? Discontentment in every aspect can be dangerous in large doses, but in small amounts you’ll be able to see and do stuff you could never imagine doing.

    6. Am I happy at where I am today?
It’s an unfair question so let it be an answer! You love being a good and loving mom or dad to your kids, then take it up a notch! Your kids will love you forever. The same goes with everyday life!

    7. Am I appealing to the opposite sex?
So maybe I don’t have an answer to that, but that doesn’t mean I can’t try it, though. Whether you shape-up, change the way you wear your clothes or hair, or even your attitude towards people, you should always remember it will always be for your own benefit.

    8. How much could I have?
I suppose in this case there is no such things on having things too much or too little, but it’s more on how badly you really need it. I’d like to have lots of money, no denying that, but the question is that how much are you willing to work for it?

    9. What motivates me?
What motivates you? It’s an answer you have to find out for yourself. There are so many things that can make everyone happy, but to choose one of the may be the hardest part. It’s not like you can’t have one serving of your favorite food in a buffet and that’s it. Just try it piece by piece.

    10. What Really Makes You Tick?
So? What really makes you tick? You can be just about anything you always wanted to be, but to realize that attaining something that may seem very difficult is already giving up before you even start that journey. Always remember, that self-improvement is not just about the physical or philosophical change you have to undergo, but it’s something that you really want.

Winter Olympics: Canada Lost Another Athlete

    November 25th, 2011

During the Winter Olympics tournament, the Canadian alpine ski team lost a second racer to injury. Allison Forsyth of Nanaimo, British Columbia, who is one of the country’s top medal threats in long-track speed skating failed to live up to expectations.

The athlete shredded her left anterior cruciate ligament during training for Wednesday’s downhill therefore she had to be treated in a hospital and returned to Sestriere where the Olympics team is staying. She will fly to Calgary where she will immediately have surgery. But she is not giving up, the 27-year-old plans to compete at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

This is the second disappointment for the Canadian alpine team. Erik Guay of Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, a medal contender, missed Sunday’s men’s downhill with a leg injury.

Canada stood ninth in the standings at the end of competition Monday, with gold and bronze medals.

The results for Canadians in the pairs figure skating competition were: National champions Valerie Marcoux of Gatineau, and Craig Buntin of Kelowna, finished 11th overall, and the No. 2 entry of Jessica Dube of Drummondville, with Bryce Davison of Cambridge, allowed them to take 10th spot among 20 pairs. Reigning world champions Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin of Russia won gold.

    The Basics Of Archery

    November 25th, 2011

Archery The skill of shooting an Arrow using a Bow was in the bygone ages a military weapon and also a hunting method before the invention of gunpowder. It is mainly confined now as a competitive sport used for target shooting.

A bow is a weapon that shoots arrows using the elasticity of the bow. The bow is made of a strip of flexible material with a cord linking the two ends of the strip to provide tension from which is propelled the arrow which is a straight shaft with a sharp point on one end or have flints and usually with feathers attached to the other end.

The modern day ‘Target Archery’ involves shooting arrows at a target from a pre-set distance. A Recurve bow is the only type of bow allowed to be used. Archery competitions may be held indoors or outdoors. Indoor distances are 18 m and 25 m. Outdoor distances range from 30 m to 90m depending on the seniority and 70 m is being used in the Olympic Games. Competition is divided into ends where an archer shoots either 3 or 6 arrows per end, depending on the type of round. There are 20 ends of 3 arrows in a round for indoor competition, but outdoor rounds generally involve more arrows per round. At the end, the competitors walk upto the target to score and retrieve their arrows.

Targets are painted with 10 evenly spaced concentric rings, which have score values from 1 through 10 assigned to them. Targets are colored as follows:

    Outermost 1 ring & 2 ring – white
    3 ring & 4 ring – black
    5 ring & 6 ring – blue
    7 ring & 8 ring – red
    Innermost 9 rings & 10 ring – gold
There is an innermost ring, sometimes called the 10X ring or the Bulls-eye.

The score for each arrow depends upon where it hits on the target. The highest score, a ten, is awarded by shooting an arrow into the two inner most circles. The bulls-eye ring is typically as a tiebreaker with most Xs winning. Missing the rings on the target results in a zero score and in case of Line breaker where an arrow just touches a boundary line will be awarded the higher score. Scores are tallied at the end of each round or volley of arrows by summing the scores for their arrows which are recorded on a score sheet.

Archers have a set time limit in which to shoot their arrows. For indoor competition is 2 minutes for 3 arrows. Signaling devices such as lights and flags prompt the archers when its time to shoot.

Auto Towing Need Not Be A Nightmare

    November 25th, 2011

All but the very luckiest of souls has, at some point, had their car towed away from them in the wake of malfunction from an automotive towing company, or worse, come out to the place it had once been parked only to find some phantom tow truck had grabbed hold of their prized possession and quickly spirited it away. The latter case is always most infuriating, though having to call an towing company is never anyones idea of a ripping good time in itself. Either way, without traffic enforcement bylaws and tow trucks we probably wouldnt recognize the world we live in, so its time to accept their existence, and know a few things about them that can help you in case you have to cross their path.

The first thing to make sure of as a car owner is that you have a plan of action in mind in the event of a breakdown or, God forbid, a sudden realization that you havent the requisite amount of gasoline to continue running that combustion engine of yours. Its embarrassing, yes but hey, it happens to all of us, so the best thing to do is swallow pride and vanity and ring up a auto towing company ASAP to get that motionless heap of your off the road as quickly as humanly possible. Having a number handy with you in your car at all times is a necessity. Just when youre having the worse day of your life as your engine overheats on two-lane bridge in the middle of summer, billowing smoke out like chimney, you dont need the added joy of having to stop and ask someone if they know the number of a tow truck so that you can quickly get out of the flow angry motorists who are bound to be making vocal their aggravation with you.

But that, of course, is the worst of the possible scenarios which could force you to have to call a towing company. Weve all done the key-in-the-ignition thing, where we frantically grope ourselves in hopes of realizing weve left our set of keys in some secret, hidden pocket we didnt realize we had, and then peered in through the tightly sealed window to see them dangling there inside locked doors. Again, we hate to admit our own stupidity, but it happens, and a towing company is the first number you punch into your cell phone to admit the understandable lapse in common sense. Of course, you may also be in the unfortunate position of having battery with no more juice without another soul around to help jumpstart you back into running order.

And then theres the other kind of auto towing that we have to bear witness to on a daily basis: the parking violation tow away. This, surely, is no laughing matter, but its also important for you as the motorist (in this case, parked motorist) to know that there are rules and regulations that every towing company must abide by before they hook themselves up to your car and speed off to the nearest impound lot. These laws are up to you to be aware of, and are occasionally broken at the motorist expense, when companies assume that car owners will be too ignorant to know their rights. Firstly, a car cannot usually be towed by an auto towing company due to a parking infraction unless the proper authorities are noted, and a significant amount of time (usually in the neighborhood of an hour) has elapsed to give the owner a chance to claim his automobile. Second, if you race out to see a truck in the process of raising your car up to tow away, you have the right to tell him to lower it back down, and it is against the law for him to impound it after you have done so.

Just knowing this much can save you money and stress, in what is bound to be a costly and stressful enough situation as it is. Know your rights and be prepared, and your encounters with the towing companies wont be as horrifying as they could be.

Bowling Rules: How The Game Works

    November 25th, 2011

Obviously, any bowling rules will be relevant and important, but keeping score? You have to learn all of the bowling rules there are, but before I tried my first game my father showed me how. You will learn many bowling rules as you continue bowling–from your very first day!

    · Bowling Scores:

There are 10 “frames”, (i.e. turns you get) in a bowling game. A score of about 120 in the 9th frame the absolute most points this person could get would add up to 150–however, the player would have to roll three strikes in a row when he or she plays the 10th frame, if this happens the player continues rolling the ball–achieving 30 pins for each strike he or she makes. The basic notion of this bowling rule is also recognized by other players, but by adding only 10-pins to the score.

    · Bowling rules for bowling attire:

    a) There really is one essential kind of bowling attire is that the players wear bowling shoes when they play. This is why having the appropriate shoes is up on the top of the list of bowling rules.

When someone does not follow basic bowling rules and wears their street shoes on the floor. If a ball drops on his or her foot, well it is likely that he or she will never make that mistake again. Seriously, a heavy bowling ball can fracture your toes–and sometimes people drop things.

    · Another one of the most important bowling rules is to use the proper technique for bowling.

    a) Bowling rules about technique:

Primarily there are a couple of simple, physical moves that will improve your bowling skills. They are different depending on whether the person is right-handed or left-handed–but quite basically the same bowling rules of posture, pressure and release.

    b) Bowling rules about mental preparation:

Perhaps it sounds pretty ridiculous, but concentration on your bowling can really help when you are trying to get that high score. Re-think the physical bowling rules, and then envision your ball rolling down the lane towards a perfect strike.

The saddest bowlers are the ones who toss the ball carelessly and have poor technique. Usually, in such circumstances, the bowling ball will end up in the gutter–so knowing the basic bowling rules is very important.
